Leadership Tip of the Week
Navigating Change #3:
A Modern Leaders Guide to Leading Change in an Organization
I see you out there! You want to make an impact and do great things in the world - to leave a lasting legacy. You want to continue helping your own business, department or organization thrive. Last week, we talked about the importance of influence and how to develop your influence in all that you do.
This week, we are focusing on how modern leaders can create real change in organizations. To guide this conversation, I like to refer to a classic book on Leading Change by John P. Kotter.
John P. Kotter's 8-step process for leading change offers a proven framework to help leaders navigate these complexities and ensure lasting transformation. But how does this model apply to today's leadership challenges?
Here's a look at how you can harness his process to drive transformational change within your organization.
1.) Establish a Sense of Urgency
Why it Matters Today: In our super-connected world, disruptions can pop up anywhere - be it digital innovations, market shifts, or evolving customer expectations. As a leader, it's your mission to pinpoint and communicate the urgency for change.
How to Ignite Action: Articulate the stakes with clarity! Use compelling data to underscore risks and missed opportunities, but also connect those dots to a purpose that resonates emotionally with your team. Cultivate a sense of urgency that springs not just from the fear of falling behind but from the excitement of seizing new opportunities.
2.) Form a Powerful Guiding Coalition
Why it Matters Today: A diverse leadership team is the backbone of successful modern organizations. When leaders from various functions and backgrounds come together, change initiatives become more inclusive and effective.
How to Make it Happen: Assemble a cross-functional team that captures a wide array of voices. Don't rely on senior leaders; include mid-level managers, influencers, and rising stars. This way, change is driven at all levels, amplifying buy-in and credibility across the board.
3.) Create a Vision for Change
Why it Matters Today: Without a clear vision, even the best change efforts can stumble. A compelling visions gives your team a shared sense of direction, aligning everyone toward a common goal.
How to Craft It: Today's leaders need to create visions that are bold yet attainable. Ensure it resonates with your team's current needs and values - whether it's embracing new technologies, championing sustainability, or enhancing employee well-being.
4.) Communicate the Vision
Why it Matters Today: This world is brimming with information, it's on overload so clear communication is crucial. For change to thrive, everyone in your organization must grasp and embrace the visions.
How to Share It: Utilize multiple platforms to convey your vision effectively, especially important today. Leverage digital tools like videos, internal social media, but don't overlook the power of face-to-face conversations. Be transparent, authentic, and consistent. Repetition is key to making sure the message sticks.
5.) Empower Broad-Based Action
Why it Matters Today: As hierarchies flatten and speed becomes essential, empowering employees to take ownership is vital. You can't let bottlenecks or red tape slow down progress!
How to Make It Work: Eliminate obstacles that stifle innovation and action. Whether it's outdated processes or cultural resistance, empower your teams by equipping them with the tools, resources, and authority they need to act. Foster a culture where taking calculated risks is not just encouraged but celebrated. Pick one barrier you can remove in that bottleneck today!
6.) Generate Short-Term Wins
Why It Matters Today: In the fast-paced world of business, patience is scarce. Long-term change can feel daunting, so crafting early victories keeps the momentum alive and builds confidence throughout the organization. Take it one day at a time, change doesn't have to feel daunting.
How to Celebrate Success: Identify small, achievable goals to hit early in the process. Celebrate the wins publicly! Share the lessons learned and spotlight the impact they're having on the broader vision. This reinforces the belief that change is both possible and worthwhile.
7.) Consolidate Gains and Produce More Change
Why it Matters Today: Beware the temptation to declare victory too soon! In today's rapidly changing landscape, the ability to continously evolve is key to long-term success.
How to keep Moving Forward: After achieving initial wins, leverage that momentum to tackle deeper, more complex changes. Stay focused on the broader vision and encourage teams to keep pushing forward instead of resting on their laurels. Recognize progress, but always ask: "What's next?"
8.) Anchor New Approaches in the Culture
Why it Matters Today: Culture is the foundation of any thriving organization. If your recent change doesn't become part of your company's DNA, it'll fizzle out as soon as the pressure eases.
How to Make It Work: To truly embed new behaviors and processes, align them with your core values and long-term goals. Celebrate and reward employees who embrace these new ways of working.
The Bottom Line: Leading Change in a Modern World
Kotter's 8-step process is still incredibly relevant, but as a modern leader, you must customize it for today's fast-paced business landscape. Change is happening at lightening speed, and leaders need to be agile, purpose-driven, and ready to harness new tools and mindsets to thrive!
Don't forget one tool is your health to drive any change, take good care of yourself and we will see you next week!

Wellness Tip of the Week
Fall Simmer Pots
Fall is here and that means it's time to indulge in all the wonderful scents of autumn. Simmer pots, a trendy scent-boosting method, are an ancient way of celebrating the seasons changing and cleansing your home of bad energy. The icing on the cake? It's a great way to make your home smell like the holidays at a low price point.
Simmer pots use all natural ingredients and can easily be customizeable to your liking. They involve simmering a combination of water and aromatic items on the stove, which releases fragrant steam into the air. Hereโs how to use them:
Step 1: Choose Your Ingredients
- Fresh or dried herbs (rosemary, thyme, mint)
- Spices (cinnamon sticks, cloves, nutmeg)
- Citrus peels (orange, lemon)
- Fruits (apples, pears, berries)
- Additional aromatics (vanilla extract, coffee beans)
Step 2: Combine Your Ingredients in a Pot
- Fill a small pot with water and add your chosen ingredients
Step 3: Simmer!
- Place the pot on the stove over low heat. Allow it to simmer gently, adding more water as needed to prevent it from drying out
Step 4: Enjoy the Aroma!
- Let the mixture simmer and enjoy the scents! Once the water has come to a boil and the ingredients have released their natural oils, you no longer need to leave the heat on.
Try different combinations to find your favorite scents. You can often reuse the same ingredients for a day or two, just refresh the water. Simmer pots are a great way to create a cozy atmosphere and bring the essence of the season into your home! Here are some of our favorites:
