Leadership Tip of the Week
Navigating Change - Part I

In September, we will focus our leadership topic on "Navigating Change".   We've been talking about how to SOAR and make the best of the rest of this year with our framework in August.  Still, unexpected things come up so we will share with how to navigate changes, uncertainty and give you practices and strategies to support you.  Navigating change is a vital part of thriving in todayโ€™s dynamic environment, both personally and professionally.  By learning to manage transitions and challenges well, you can enhance your adaptability, seize new opportunities, and build resilience for a more empowered and fulfilling life.

I thought I would share my personal story and journey on navigating change to kick-off this month.  Over the past four years, I've experienced more signficant change than ever before.  It all began in 2020 when the business division I led shifted from rapid growth to a standstill overnight.  All my plans went out the window; I had envisioned staying for at least five more years, with more investors on the horizon.  I had travel plans, home projects lined up, and a clear financial roadmap.  All in question in a matter of days.  I worked tirelessly with my team to rebuild over three years, feeling like we were walking in quicksand - always striving to advance, only to be pulled back time and time again.

Finally, in 2023, the business turned a corner, but I faced another unbelievable challenge: losing my father and brother within four months.  This devastating period forced me to reflect on whether I was truly living to my fullest, as my dad encouraged me to do in his final words saying he did it "his way".  During a trip in the summer of 2023, I realized that I felt I needed to be doing "more" and wanted to make a broader impact than my current situation allowed.  I also wanted to honor my dads legacy.  I decided it was time to go all-in on my business, to share the lessons I'd learned and champion a movement for modern leadership and living that is desperately needed.

With that decision, I gave an extended notice and left my executive role after 19 years.  I had a strong conviction that I was meant to do this, so I left behind money, comfort, and my team, starting over at the bottom of a new mountain.  Some days are tough, but I know those moments are where I learn the most and are a necessary part of the journey.

Being an entrepreneur is the hardest job I've ever had, but the challenges are fostering personal growth in new ways I never would have experienced staying in my comfort zone.  I committed long ago to living with a growth mindset and being a fierce learner as long as I am here.  This practice has helped me tremendously to navigate rough patches plus it makes me a better coach.

As I navigate my own transition and change, I'd like to share five key strategies that have been helpful.

1: Don't go at it alone!  I've often felt like an outsider, pushing the limits of what's possible in a world where many seek proof or cling to conventional practices.  Your tribe is out there - if you don't see them nearby, explore new groups with similiar interests.  Some of my most meaningful relationships have come from stepping outside my bubble.  No matter your age, you can find your community and lean on them for support.  I regularly connect with many for advice, encouragement, and to cheer them on.

2: Manage your thoughts actively.  Instead of giving in to negativity, I ask myself, "What can I learn from this?"  One of my mentors reminds me to consider, "What is the next best step I can take with integrity?"  Setbacks are part of life, and if you're not experiencing them, you might be too comfortable.  When faced with negativity, take a deep breath, acknowledge the situation, and focus on finding the next best step.  This approach can be incredibly helpful!

3: Maintain your habits.  I can't emphasize this enough.  When you commit to yourself, stick to it.  A consistent morning routine is, no doubt, a game changer.  This year my routine has been disrupted with a new schedule and I noticed big impact it had on everything else.  I am sticking with it.  When you feel good, you perform better in all areas, no doubt about it!

4: Journal daily.  Whether you call it journaling, writing or doodling, just put pen to paper!  I'm not perfect at this, but when I do it, the clarity that emerges is invaluable.  I've discovered my love for writing, and getting my thoughts down helps me process and plan my next steps.  Get off social media each day for this and it will change your life.

5: Foster open communication with your partner.  My husband and I have had many discussions about my journey.  I need to express my needs, and he needs to do the same.  This requires onging dialogue and appreciation.  Sharing fears, dreams, and challenges is powerful.  Initially, my husband was concerned about my decision to leave my job; he prefers knowing what to expect.  I'm the visionary who pushes boundaries, while he keeps us grounded and figures out how to make things happen.  He knows that when I commit to something, I am going to do it.  We've faced challenges over the years, but we actively work on our relationship.  Keeping communication open helps us to stay connected to each other's needs.

I hope sharing some of my journey shows you that everyone has challenges and faces uncertainty.  Change is inevitable, and the more adept you are at navigating it while staying true to your best self, the quicker you'll progress.  A significant obstacle for many is their mindset; negative thoughts often arise from not feeling our best.  To counter this, focus on cultivating positive habits, surround yourself with inspiring people, and implement practices to reframe negative thoughts as they emerge.  You can do anything, handle anything, I believe that and I believe in YOU!

Ready to integrate reflective recharges into your routine?  Book a consultation and we will tailor a plan that fits your unique needs.  Stay ahead, stay energized, and keep achieving your big goals!

The Benefits of Essential Oils

Essential oils have been used dating back to pre-historic times.  They've had a wide variety of importance to varying cultures for thousands of years.  While it is important to note that the FDA doesn't regulate essential oils, data continues to show that essential oils do in fact show many benefits depending on the oil and how it's used. Here are some common advantages:

  1. Aromatherapy: Essential oils are widely used in aromatherapy to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and enhance mood. Scents like lavender, chamomile, and bergamot are often used for these purposes.

  2. Stress Relief: Oils like lavender, frankincense, and sandalwood can help calm the mind and body, making them popular choices for reducing anxiety and promoting a sense of tranquility.

  3. Improved Sleep: Essential oils such as lavender and chamomile are often used to improve sleep quality and help with insomnia. They can be diffused in the air or used in a calming bedtime routine.

  4. Skin Care: Many essential oils have antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, making them beneficial for skin care. For example, tea tree oil is known for its acne-fighting properties, and rosehip oil is praised for its anti-aging effects.

  5. Pain Relief: Some essential oils, like peppermint and eucalyptus, can help alleviate headaches, muscle pain, and joint pain when used topically or in a bath.

  6. Digestive Health: Oils like ginger and peppermint are sometimes used to aid digestion and relieve symptoms like nausea or bloating.

  7. Immune Support: Certain essential oils, such as eucalyptus and thyme, are believed to have immune-boosting properties that can help the body fight off infections.

  8. Natural Cleaning: Essential oils like lemon, tea tree, and lavender have antibacterial and antifungal properties that make them effective in homemade cleaning products.

  9. Enhanced Focus and Energy: Oils like rosemary and peppermint can help improve concentration and boost energy levels, making them useful for enhancing mental clarity and alertness.

  10. Personal Care Products: Essential oils are often added to personal care items like shampoos, conditioners, and lotions for their pleasant scents and potential benefits to hair and skin.

When used properly, essential oils are an incredibly affordable method that can be used in a plethora of ways to elevate your day to day!

At some point, the business needs you to lead differently than what got you here.
When I stepped into the President role, I thought I understood what the responsibility would require. I had spent years inside the business, starting as a retail and marketing specialist and growing through multiple leadership roles to SVP. I knew how the business worked. I knew the people. I knew how to carry responsibility. What I hadnโ€™t fully grasped was how much I would need to change. The ...
A quick note about the Pulse

And thatโ€™s intentional. I believe part of whatโ€™s happening in our businesses and on our teams right now is that weโ€™re losing perspective in all the noise....
