The Fine Line Between Being Liked and Being Respected
If they're not showing up for you like they used to, this might be the shift you need to make.
The Fine Line Between Being Liked and Being Respected
What happens when the people you lead don't show up for you the way they used to?
This comes up all the time - especially with business owners and leaders who have built close-knit teams, fostered loyalty, and created a culture of camaraderie. But now, the business is growing. Stakes are higher. And you need more from your people.
Yet somehow, you're getting less.
"I think I've been too friendly. Now I'm sure they take me seriously."
"They miss deadlines, brush things off, and I end up cleaning up the mess behind the scenes."
"I don't think they'd do this if it were someone else."
If any of that sounds familiar, you're not alone.
This is one of the most common growth pains for modern leaders.
Here's what's happening:
When you've blurred the line between peer and leader - when you've been understanding, casual, and maybe even protective - it can create confusion around expectations.
And in the gap, people start assuming...it's not that serious.
But here's the deal: If you don't define what matters, people will assume it doesn't.
So how do you shift...without losing connection?
You lead intention - and yes, with compassion too.
Here's how:
- Paint the vision of where you're going together. Let them see the bigger mission. Why it matters. Why they matter.
- Enlist them in that vision. Too often, we miss this step. Invite them into what it means to be part of this team, why their role matters, and how they contribute to something meaningful. People want to feel part of the story - not just the task.
- Clarify expectations, then hold them. This isn't about being rigid. It's about making the standard clear and consistent. No more assumptions.
- Be direct, not harsh. You can be warm and firm at the same time.
- Invite them into the new standard. Don't just issue rules - co-create what success looks like now. Show them what's possible if they rise with you.
You don't have to become someone you're not to lead well. You just have to decide to lead - with vision, clarity, and great communication.
It's a shift we're actively working on inside the Modern Leadership Collective, where leaders like you are learning to communicate what they need and build teams that rise with them - not run over them.

The 2025 Dirty Dozen - What to Know, What to Avoid, and How to Shop Smarter
Each year the Environmental Working Group (EWG) releases it's "Dirty Dozen" list - highlighting the top 12 fruits and vegetables most contaminated with pesticide residues, even after washing. The 2025 list is out, and it's a reminder that what we don't see on our produce can still impact our health.
The 2025 Dirty Dozen:
- Strawberries
- Spinach
- Kale, Collard & Mustard Greens
- Grapes
- Peaches
- Pears
- Nectarines
- Apples
- Bell & Hot Peppers
- Cherries
- Blueberries
- Green Beans
You'll notice some familiar favorites in there - many of which show up in lunchboxes, smoothies, and salads. While we're not here to fear food, it's worth being mindful about how and where we spend our grocery dollars.
Wellness Tips for a Healthier Plate:
-> Prioritize Organic for the Dirty Dozen: If organic isn't always an option, start with the items on this list. These crops consistently show higher levels and varieties of pesticide residues.
-> Get to Know the Clean Fifteen: On the flip side, EWG also shares the Clean Fifteen - produce that tends to have the lowest pesticide residues. These are typically safter to buy conventionally.
-> Support Local & In-Season: Local farmers often use fewer chemicals, even if they're not certified organic. Seasonal produce also tends to be fresher and more affordable.
-> Wash Well - but Don't Rely Solely on It: Washing helps but doesn't remove all pesticide residues. Peeling may help in some cases but can reduce nutrients too.
Progress > Perfection: Don't let this list overwhelm you. Being informed is about empowerment, not perfection. Every intentional choice supports your wellness journey.
