Are You Missing the Gold Right Beside You?

Last week, we shared a post about the hidden potential that might already exist on your team.  Today, we're diving deeper into this topic because it's one of the biggest opportunities - and challenges - leaders face.
Next week, we'll share insights on what to look for when you do hire externally (hint: it's not just the resume).  But first, let's focus on what you might already have.
There's a story about a man who sold his land to travel the world in search of diamonds.  After years of relentless searching, he died broke and defeated - never knowing that the land he sold contained one of the richest diamond mines ever discovered.
This fable is a powerful reminder that the gold you're searching for may already be right beside you.
In leadership, the most successful organizations don't just hire talent - they uncover it, nurture it, and put it in the right places to succeed.
A Key Leadership Skill You Can't Overlook
One of the greatest abilities a leader can develop is the ability to build a team that's aligned, engaged, and moving in the same direction.
This is the truth for Modern Leadership: if you don't have people in leadership roles who believe it's their job to make everyone around them better, you're setting yourself up for a struggling road ahead.
Yes, there are times when bringing in new talent is essential.  But don't do it at the expense of clearly understanding and developing the talent you already have.

This is what we teach in Modern Leadership:
  • How to recognize hidden talent within your team.
  • How to position talent for success as you scale.
  • How to retain your best people and foster a culture where everyone thrives.
  • When it's the right time to hire externally and how to make that decision strategically.
If you're ready to take this to the next level, reach out.  We're actively taking on 2 companies and their leadership teams right now to implement these strategies and help them scale effectively.
Why Leaders Miss Hidden Potential
  • Distance from the ground level.  When we're too far removed from the day-to-day, we miss the small but meaningful contributions of those around us.
  • Assumptions over insights.  Decisions based on limited interactions or surface-level observations lead us to overlook hidden gems.
  • No cadence of connection.  Without regular, intentional conversations, it's hard to truly see the value in others.
How Great Leaders Turn Potential into Gold
1.) They look closer.  Instead of focusing only on what's missing, they ask, "What strengths already exist on my team?"
2.) They nurture talent.  They see potential not as a fixed trait but as something that can be developed with the right opportunities.  They have a regular cadence that they stick to for check-ins, keeping them connected to goals, growth and needs of their team members.
3.) They inspire action.  Great leaders don't just give pep talks - they empower their teams to step up and shine.
Why This Matters Now More Than Ever
With hiring becoming more competitive, retaining and developing your existing talent isn't just a leadership skill - it's a strategic advantage.
"Great leaders uncover hidden talent and help it shine.  The gold you're looking for may be right beside you."
A Question for You...
What hidden potential might already be on your team, just waiting for you to uncover it?
Let's dig deeper, together.

Nourish Your Gut, Nourish Your Life

This month, we’re focusing on gut health as our wellness topic because a healthy gut is foundational to energy, focus, and emotional resilience—critical traits for effective leadership. The gut-brain connection influences mental clarity, stress management, and mood regulation, directly impacting decision-making and how leaders show up for their teams. By prioritizing gut health, leaders can elevate their wellbeing and set the tone for a more vibrant, productive workplace.
When it comes to gut health, we often zero in on diet, focusing on what we eat to maintain a healthy microbiome.
But there's a deeper layer to consider: Primary Food.
Primary food refers to the non-dietary elements that nourish your life - your career, relationships, physical activity, spirituality, and more.  These aspects of our lives have a profound impact on how we feel, perform, and even how our gut functions.  Secondary food is the dietary element.  It is the integrative teachings that focus on primary food that has a huge impact on our health.
Neglecting areas like stress management, connection, and fulfillment can lead to imbalances that ripple through your physical and mental well-being.  But by prioritizing your primary food, you can take a holistic approach to wellness that strengthens your gut health - and your life.
How Primary Food Impacts Gut Health
1.) Stress Management: Chronic stress disrupts the gut-brain connection, contributing to inflammation and poor digestion.  Practices like meditation, diaphragmatic breathing, and mindfulness can activate your "rest and digest" mode, supporting nutrient absorption and calming gut-related issues.
2.) Social Connections: Quality relationships enhance emotional well-being and reduce stress, which directly benefits gut health.  Spending time with others, especially in-person, can even diversify your microbiome by exposing you to different bacteria.
3.) Daily Movement: Physicial activity aids digestion by improving circulation and persistalsis (the contractions that move food through your digestive system).  Even short walks can have a big impact, keeping things moving and boosting beneficial gut microbes.
4.) Restorative Sleep: Poor sleep disrupts hormones that regulate hunger and digestion.  Building a sleep routine that works for you - such as journaling before bed, turning off electronics early, or sipping herbal tea - can significantly improve gut health and energy levels.
5.) Passion and Purpose: Feeling fulfilled and aligned with your passions reduces stress and enhances overall well-being.  When you're living a life that excites and inspires you, your gut reaps the rewards too.
Putting it All Together
Taking care of your gut is about more than what's on your plate.  It's about creating a life that feeds your soul, reduces stress, and keeps you energized.
Take Actionable Step:
Take a moment to assess the following areas of primary food: stress, social connections, movement, sleep, and fulfillment.  Which two areas feel most depleted?  Start there.  Small, intentional shifts - like a daily gratitude practice or a 10 minute walk can create ripple effects across your gut and your entire well-being.
When you prioritize nourishing both your body and your life, you show up as a more vibrant, focused, and inspired leader.  Let's lead from the inside out.🌟

At some point, the business needs you to lead differently than what got you here.
When I stepped into the President role, I thought I understood what the responsibility would require. I had spent years inside the business, starting as a retail and marketing specialist and growing through multiple leadership roles to SVP. I knew how the business worked. I knew the people. I knew how to carry responsibility. What I hadn’t fully grasped was how much I would need to change. The ...
A quick note about the Pulse
I want to share something with you about this space, about The Pulse. In a world where I’m constantly told to write shorter captions, be more edgy, create more scroll-stopping hooks, and chase attention on social media…this is not that space. And that’s intentional. I believe part of what’s happening in our businesses and on our teams right now is that we’re losing perspective in all the noise....
